The largest accomplishment to date for the GW Grounds Committee has been the Gateway Project. This was a comprehensive overhaul of the school’s north entrance area, which is used as the main entrance of the school even though it was not originally designed as such. Key features of the renovation include a wider sidewalk and bench/wall for student drop-off and pick-up, all new landscaping, irrigation and lighting for the entire entrance sequence, a donor brick area in the main walkway and the Gateway structure itself with its welcoming sign.

Design and fundraising took four years and the project was constructed in the summer of 2013. This much needed renovation would not have happened without the help of hundreds of students, parents, alumni, teachers and members of the surrounding community who purchased donor bricks and tree plaques and who turned out in droves on work days to help put in plants and trees. We are also grateful for grants from the Colorado Garden Show and Whole Foods, and especially to Denver Public Schools Facilities, which made it all possible with a matching grant for every dollar we raised. The north entrance is now a welcoming portal for all the GW students, parents, school staff and members of the public who use the school and grounds. Along with other campus-wide improvements, it has significantly enhanced the appearance of the school and enhanced the cohesiveness of the academic and neighborhood community.
