On April 7, 2021, a group of strong GW students and volunteers picked up a very special tree at the Denver Botanic Gardens where it had been nurtured into a 5 foot tall sapling. This sapling was then planted near the north entrance of the school. This tree is an American elm (Ulmus americana) that is a cutting from a tree that was a cutting from the historical elm tree in Cambridge, Massachusetts under which George Washington was reputedly invested as commander of the Continental Army.
The GW Grounds Committee is grateful to Sonia John who thought of our school campus as a good location for this historic tree, and our group as responsible stewards to care for and protect the tree. We are also grateful to Mike Kintgen of the Denver Botanic Gardens who took care of the tree and helped us pick it up. We are deeply honored to have been given this tree and entrusted with it's care.
