Go Green 2023
On May 6, 2023 the GW Landscape Committee hosted a very successful (15th annual!) Go Green Day. Around 60 students, teachers, staff, parents, and City Year leaders participated. These energetic volunteers, together with GW Landscape Committee members, DPS Facilities and Denver forestry, made the day a huge success.
Six trees were planted by students and team leaders, including three Turkish filberts, a yellowwood, a redbud and a concolor fir on the east and south sides of the building. Denver Forestry planted an additional five trees, including a Kentucky coffee tree and Japanese pagoda tree along Monaco and an Osage orange and golden raintree along Exposition, plus a ponderosa pine near the tennis courts. These species all added to the incredible diversity of GW’s growing tree collection! New trees were mulched, watered-in, fertilized, staked and caged, helping to ensure long-term growing success. In addition, existing trees across campus were tended and mulched, trash was picked up and lots of weeding was done. The grounds look fabulous!
Preparations for the big day included extensive planning: choosing tree species and locations, publicizing the event, securing volunteers, engaging the school and students, and getting trees ordered and delivered just in time. In addition, we were delighted that DPS Grounds mechanically removed dead trees and dug out old stumps, and Barb DeSarro conducted soil testing in trouble areas, confirming that soil was good.
We are deeply grateful to the many participants who made this day a success. Thank you so much to those of you who are newly committed to making GW a jewel in the neighborhood AND to those who have worked for years to make the campus beautiful and welcoming. A special thanks to Dr. Davis for supporting us from the beginning and for rolling up her sleeves and working hard on Go Green Day. We are so grateful to Malcolm Quattlebaum, our enthusiastic partner in this endeavor, who worked tirelessly to get students involved, and cheerfully coordinated check-in, t-shirts, and pizza. Malcolm also took great photos of the day, some of which are displayed here. We are so appreciative of the Denver Office of Forestry, for believing in our group and for many years providing trees and mulch for our projects, and we are thankful to Rey and David from Facilities, whose hard work and cooperation is essential to the success of the GW Landscape Committee’s efforts. A heartfelt thank you and big shout-out to our fearless leaders, Lee Ann Huntington and Shannon Good, as well as the whole GW Landscape Committee, many of whom show up year after year to lend a hand.
The transformation of the George Washington campus over the past 16 years, thanks to the efforts of the GW Landscape Committee, is remarkable. Through annual Go Green Days and regular volunteer community service days, the committee has planted over a hundred trees. They have coordinated the installation of new beds and the cleanup of existing garden spaces: weeding, spreading mulch and creating beauty for all to enjoy. The Committee’s members, a group of dedicated parents of students and past students, welcome new members. If you would like to join our efforts to make GW a more beautiful place for all, please contact any of our committee members, or Lisa at [email protected] for more information.
