Go Green 2017
If you haven’t seen the newest addition to the GW Campus, you will want to check out the new School/Community Garden, named The Green Space by the students. The new garden is located in the south courtyard, within the walled area just off of the greenhouse and biology classrooms. The garden was completed on April 15th, 2017 as the main focus of GW’s annual Go Green Day. Go Green Day, organized by the GW Grounds Committee, was a wonderful day of service and accomplishment where approximately 65 students and 35 adults worked together to install planters mix and crusher fines into beds and pathways.
The student groups who helped on Go Green Day included AVID, NHS, Girls’ Soccer, BSA, GW Ambassadors, JROTC, Pep Club, Softball, Grow Club, VOA, Boys’ Lacrosse, and even some middle school students. In addition, stagecraft students built the wooden bed frames, and art students are designing and building mosaic benches to be placed in the garden.
Thank you to all who came out to help. The weather was perfect, and everyone got a good workout and a bit of sun!
This garden would not have been possible without the vision, design and construction assistance provided by Denver Urban Gardens; and Target Foundation, who provided the primary funding for the garden. Thank you also to the Crestmoor Garden Club, who made a generous monetary contribution to the garden, and to Country Fair Garden Center and Tagawa Gardens who both contributed supplies. Please note that Country Fair has moved to a close new location at Leetsdale and Quebec. We were delighted that the Denver Fire Department, Station #19, came and helped us break up some of the compacted soil areas.
Many of the garden plots have already been planted, and will soon be producing peas, lettuce, spinach and other veggies. Eight of the plots are dedicated to GW students and DPS Garden of Youth students. The Grow Club will plant the GW plots, producing vegetables and fruits that will go into the school cafeteria to be used in the salad bar. Garden of Youth students will take their produce to local farmer’s markets, further developing their gardening, marketing and interpersonal skills.
